Try pushing messages in social networks, however, and you find out just how different this channel is.
So, maybe the best way to answer the question: What is social media marketing? …is to determine what it is NOT.
1. Social Media Marketing is NOT Advertising
If you’re sending your advertising through social networks, you’re probably doing yourself a lot of harm.
2. Social Media Marketing is NOT About YOU
Think like a coach or teacher. People are on social networks for what they GET out of them, not what they put in.
3. Social Media Marketing is NOT Technology.
Understanding consumer behavior and developing a cogent strategy based on this understanding is what creates success in social media marketing, NOT technology.
3. Social Media Marketing is NOT just for "the kids."
Consumers from all generations use social media marketing — as a matter of fact, the fastest growing group on Facebook are baby boomers and the most influential sharers are middle-aged women.

SoMeO principal, Virginia DeBerry, is the co-author of seven bestselling novels and a former magazine editor. She stumbled into the then nascent web in 1992 and finding it awkward and intrusive, did her best to escape. But technology evolved and so did Virginia’s comfort level. However it was not until she utilized the Internet in 1997 to help promote a novel, that she realized the power of cyber connection. The arrival of social media on the cyber-scene and the emergence of Web 2.0 technology, which encouraged and supported a sense of community online, Virginia, a “people person” found the entire web experience had become more human and less “techy” and she finally felt at home.
